When can you be consulted by a PRT and what prerequisites are required (Catagories of patients)?
Although you can see a Physiotherapist without a medical referral, such is not the case for the Physiotherapy Technologist (PRT).
Consultation with a PRT professional in Quebec requires at least either a prescription (medical referral) issued by a Medical Doctor (MD), or a Physiotherapist (PT) as well as the relevant medical history of a patient.
Category 1 (patient): - has a diagnosed illness and requires help to regain, maintain or stall the deterioration of mobility.
In this case the PRT professional is able to:
- determine the list of specific problems
- establish what the treatment objectives will be
- determine what modalities of treatment will be employed
- establish a list of precautions and contraindications
Category 2 (patient): - has a rheumatoid or orthopedic condition that is not affected by the growth process.
In this case the PRT professional would need from an MD or PT the list of problems suffered by the patient. The PRT is able to:
- establish what the treatment objectives will be
- determine what modalities of treatment will be employed
- establish a list of precautions and contraindications
Category 3 (patient)
- has a rheumatoid or orthopedic condition that is affected by the growth process.
- an neurological condition not being intensive treated
- a peripheral vascular problem or respiratory problem
- skin lesions
- a geriatric condition requiring further assessment
In this case the PRT professional would need from an MD or PT the list of problems suffered by the patient, the treatment objectives, and a list of precautions and contraindications. The PRT is able to:
- determine what modalities of treatment will be employed
Category 4 (patient): any patient not covered by the first three categories.
In this case the PRT professional would need from an MD or PT the list of problems suffered by the patient, the treatment objectives, and a list of precautions and contraindications, and modalities of treatment. The PRT will be only be following the directives of the MD or PT.
